What is Welded Pipe?
Welded Pipe is a type of steel pipe formed by joining steel plates or strips through a welding process. Unlike seamless pipes, welded pipes feature a visible weld seam, which is created using techniques such as electric resistance welding (ERW), submerged arc welding (SAW), or induction welding. This manufacturing method allows for greater flexibility in producing pipes of various diameters, wall thicknesses, and lengths, making them widely used in applications ranging from construction and water supply systems to mechanical structures and industrial pipelines.
Manufacturing Process of Welded Pipe
- Plate/Strip Preparation:High-quality steel plates or strips are selected and cut to the desired width. The edges are often pre-processed (e.g., deburring or beveling) to ensure proper alignment and welding quality.
- Forming:The steel plate/strip is shaped into a cylindrical form through rolling or bending. For circular pipes, this involves feeding the material through a series of rolls that gradually curve it into a tubular shape. The edges are aligned to form a longitudinal seam.
- Welding:The aligned edges are welded together using one of several methods:Electric Resistance Welding (ERW)—— Heat is generated via electrical resistance at the seam, which is then pressed together to form a solid bond.Submerged Arc Welding (SAW):——A continuous wire electrode and granular flux are used to create a molten weld pool, resulting in a strong, durable seam.Induction Welding—— High-frequency induction heating melts the edges of the steel strip, which are then welded under pressure.
- Sizing and Straightening:After welding, the pipe is passed through sizing rolls to ensure accurate dimensional compliance (e.g., outer diameter and wall thickness). It is then straightened to eliminate any curvature or deformations introduced during the manufacturing process.
- Post-Weld Treatment (Optional):Depending on the application, the pipe may undergo additional processes:Heat Treatment—— To improve mechanical properties (e.g., hardness, ductility) or relieve internal stresses.Surface Finishing:——Painting, galvanizing, or coating to enhance corrosion resistance.Non-Destructive Testing (NDT):——Methods like ultrasonic or radiographic testing to inspect weld integrity.
